On 31st October 2017, Dr Richard Hall, School of Geography, University of Lincoln, presented a lecture on the jet stream and seasonal forecasting to the Little Ship Club in London.
The invitation arose after a meeting between School of Geography academics and Club members, at a Met Office conference in early 2017. The Little Ship Club is a long-established club in London, which includes round-the-world sailors, such as Sir Robin Knox-Johnston among its members.
The club offers an important training programme and was awarded a Blue Defaced Ensign by the admiralty in 1938, in recognition of its training of Royal Naval reserve officers. As an audience of sailors, there was a good deal of interest in a topic related to the weather, and members asked a range of thoughtful questions in a subsequent question-and-answer session and in more informal conversation over dinner afterwards.
During his presentation, Dr Hall also presented an outline of the new School of Geography at the University of Lincoln. You can find out more about the School here.
